Where AI autocomplete saves the most typing.
WeType works in every app on your Mac, but it is not equally useful everywhere. These are the places it earns its keep, with the setting that makes the most difference in each.

Email replies
Replies are the most predictable writing most people do, and the most repetitive: acknowledging, confirming, rescheduling, thanking. They are where AI autocomplete earns its keep.
The setting that matters is surrounding context. With a model of about 1.5 GB or larger, WeType reads the message you are replying to, so the suggestion answers the question that was asked rather than merely continuing your sentence plausibly.
Tip: Keep “Use surrounding context” on and use the default 3B model or larger.

Slack, Discord, Messages, and chat boxes in the browser
Slack, Discord and Messages
Chat is short and fast, so the win is fewer keystrokes per message rather than whole paragraphs. Taking a suggestion one word at a time with Tab suits it: accept the obvious half of the sentence, type the part only you know.
Where Enter sends and Tab already means something, you stay in control. Tab acceptance can be switched off per app, and either accept key can be rebound.
Tip: If suggestions feel too long for chat, lower the maximum suggestion length in Settings.

Notes and long documents
In long-form writing, autocomplete helps most with the connective tissue, the second half of a sentence whose direction is already set, and least with the ideas themselves. That is the right way round: the thinking stays yours.
WeType learns from a small local sample of your own sentences, so over time suggestions pick up your phrasing rather than a generic register. You can read every stored sentence and delete any of them.
Tip: Add a custom instruction such as “British spelling” or “keep it concise” to steer the register.
The main risk with the new schedule is that we lose a week of testing before the release.

Commit messages, comments and docs
WeType is not a replacement for an in-editor coding assistant, but it covers the text around code that those assistants often do not: commit messages in the terminal, comments, docstrings, READMEs and pull-request descriptions.
Pair it with a code-tuned model. Qwen 2.5 Coder 1.5B runs on most Macs; Coder 7B wants 32 GB or more. In code editors WeType inserts by pasting rather than typing, so editors that auto-close brackets do not double them.
Tip: Turn off Tab acceptance in your editor if Tab is how you indent, and use the key above Tab instead.

Support and repeat replies
If you answer the same questions every day, two tools work together. Text replacements handle the fixed parts, such as a link or a policy paragraph, exactly the same every time. Autocomplete handles the parts that vary with each customer's message.
Because the model runs on your Mac, customer messages you reply to are not sent to a third-party AI service to produce a suggestion.
Tip: Check with your organisation before using any AI tool on customer data, on-device or not.

Writing in more than one language
Automatic language detection can wobble on a short field, especially when you switch languages mid-conversation. WeType lets you pin completions to one of 15 languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Hindi, Urdu, Arabic and Japanese, or leave it on automatic.
Quality depends on the model. The larger multilingual models, such as Qwen 2.5 3B and Gemma 3 4B, handle more languages well than the smallest ones.
Tip: Pin the language in Settings › General › Completion language when you write mostly in one.

Typing less, when typing is hard
For anyone who finds typing tiring or painful, the value of autocomplete is simply fewer keystrokes. A single key that accepts a phrase can replace dozens of presses, and it works in every app rather than only in one editor.
It combines well with macOS dictation for long passages and with text replacements for fixed phrases.
Tip: Raise the maximum suggestion length so each accept covers more text.

- Does WeType work in Gmail?
- Yes. Gmail in Safari, Chrome, Arc, Firefox, Edge or Brave uses a standard text area, which WeType reads through macOS accessibility. The thread you are replying to can shape the suggestion when surrounding context is on.
- Does WeType work in Microsoft Word?
- Yes, since version 1.0.1. WeType reads Word's editable text area and places suggestions inside the document.
- Can I use WeType for coding?
- For the text around code, yes: commit messages, comments, docstrings and documentation, ideally with a code-tuned model. It is not a replacement for an in-editor coding assistant that writes functions.
- Can I turn WeType off in some apps?
- Yes. You can disable it in any single app from the menu bar or Settings › Per-App, turn off Tab acceptance where Tab already means something, or pause it everywhere for 5, 15 or 60 minutes.
