What is WeType?

WeType is a macOS app that finishes your sentences while you type. It watches the text field you are typing in, predicts what comes next using a language model running on your own Mac, and shows the prediction as grey ghost text after your cursor. Press Tab to take the next word, or the backtick key to take the whole thing. It works in every app on your Mac rather than in one editor.

Does WeType send what I type to a server?

No. The language model runs on your Mac, so your text is never uploaded and never leaves the machine. WeType makes exactly three kinds of network request, none of which carry your text: downloading a model you chose, checking for an app update, and validating your licence key after you buy. It works with the Wi-Fi off.

How big is the download really?

The app itself is 7.9 MB. The language model is a separate download you start inside the app on first run, and it is the large part: from 379 MB for the smallest model up to 4.5 GB for the largest. The recommended default, Qwen 2.5 3B (base), is about 1.9 GB. Nothing is bundled because which model to run is your choice.

Which Macs does WeType run on?

WeType needs an Apple Silicon Mac (M1, M2, M3 or M4) running macOS 14 Sonoma or later. Intel Macs are not supported, because the on-device model is built for Apple Silicon.

Which apps does it work in?

Any app with a standard macOS text field: Mail, Messages, Slack, Notes, Safari, Chrome, VS Code, Xcode, Terminal, Notion, Obsidian, and so on. WeType reads the focused field through the macOS accessibility layer rather than through a plugin, so there is nothing to install per app. Fields that render their own text on a canvas can be the exception.

What does the free trial include, exactly?

Every feature, for 5 days, with a cap of 100 accepted words per day. The count resets at midnight and the menu bar shows what is left. No account and no card are needed to start, so there is nothing to cancel if you stop using it. After 5 days, suggestions stop until you buy a licence.

How much does WeType cost?

$20 once for a lifetime licence, or $6 a month. Both unlock exactly the same app. The only difference is how you pay. There is a 30-day money-back guarantee on both.

How do I cancel a subscription?

Through the LemonSqueezy customer portal. Enter your email, follow the emailed link, and cancel there. You keep access until the end of the period you have paid for, after which WeType reverts to the trial rules. A lifetime licence has nothing to cancel and never expires.

Why does WeType need Accessibility and Input Monitoring permissions?

Accessibility lets it read the text and cursor position in the field you are typing in, and insert the words you accept. There is no other macOS API that can do either. Input Monitoring lets it notice your keystrokes so a suggestion can follow your typing and so the Tab key can be caught when a suggestion is showing. Keystrokes are not recorded anywhere. Screen Recording is optional, off by default, and not needed for normal use.

Can WeType see my passwords?

No. Password boxes and anything macOS marks as protected are skipped, as is any field whose label looks like a credential. Password, passcode, CVV, one-time code. Banking, payment and health sites are excluded by default, you can add your own, and you can switch WeType off entirely for any app including your password manager. The check happens before the read, so a disabled app is never looked at in the first place.

Does WeType learn how I write?

Yes, if you leave it on. It keeps a small rolling sample of complete sentences you have written. At most 40 per app, 240 characters each, and puts a few of them in front of the model so suggestions sound like you rather than like a generic assistant. It stays in a plain file on your Mac, password fields are never recorded, samples expire after 90 days by default, and you can read everything it has kept and delete it at any time.

Will it get in my way while I type?

It is built not to. A suggestion only appears with the cursor at the end of a line, with nothing selected, and only after you have actually typed something. Moving the cursor, clicking elsewhere, scrolling, or pressing Escape takes it away and keeps it away until you type again. You can also pause it for 5, 15 or 60 minutes, or turn it off in one app while leaving it on everywhere else.

How is this different from ChatGPT or a cloud writing assistant?

Three ways. It runs on your Mac, so your text is not sent anywhere and there is no per-token cost or rate limit. It works everywhere you type instead of in one app or one browser tab. And it does not write for you: it predicts the next few words of the sentence you are already writing, and you accept them one word at a time, so what ends up on screen is still yours.

Does WeType work offline?

Yes. Once the model is downloaded, predictions need no internet at all. It works on a plane and on an air-gapped machine. The only things that need a connection are downloading a model, checking for updates, and the first validation of a licence key.

Which languages does it work in?

Completions can be pinned to any of 15 languages. English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and others including Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, or left on automatic, where the model follows whatever you are writing in. Quality depends on the model you choose; the larger ones handle more languages well.

How do I uninstall it?

Quit it from the menu bar, drag WeType from Applications to the Trash, and if you want everything gone, delete the folder at ~/Library/Application Support/WeType. That folder holds the models and your local typing history. Nothing about you exists on any server, so there is nothing to delete on our end.
